According to reporting by Bitcoin Magazine, Japanese firm Metaplanet sold 10,000 bitcoin for approximately $789.2 million before subsequently purchasing 11,000 bitcoin for $948.7 million during the third quarter of 2026. The Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed company announced in a filing that the transaction aimed to strengthen confidence in its creditworthiness and broaden its access to future financing, including corporate bonds and preferred shares. Metaplanet stated that the sale was not a formal disposal, but rather a demonstration that the group can convert its bitcoin into cash exceeding its total outstanding principal amount of bonds, borrowings, and interest-bearing liabilities. CEO Simon Gerovich noted on X that the company held the cash before buying back more bitcoin than it sold. With a net increase of 1,000 bitcoin in the third quarter, Metaplanet reached a total of 44,000 coins on its balance sheet, making it the second-largest corporate holder of the asset globally. The company's stock was up on Monday following the filing announcement, amid a broader rally in the price of bitcoin that has boosted corporate treasury values.
