According to Bitcoin Magazine, Japan Bitcoin Industry Co., Ltd. debuted a self-custodial Bitcoin payments platform named "Aurora" at the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong. The platform aims to help Japanese companies sell content to international fans who face geographic payment restrictions with traditional systems.

Aurora utilizes the Lightning Network to allow international customers to pay in Bitcoin, while providing Japanese merchants with an API layer and point-of-sale system for invoicing, tracking, and integrations. The market for Japanese anime content outside of Japan reached ¥2.17 trillion in 2024, reflecting a 26% year-over-year increase, according to the report.

The platform is designed so that JBI never handles the funds. Instead, merchants operate their own self-custodial Lightning nodes to receive Bitcoin directly. JBI manages operational tasks such as node uptime, liquidity, accounting, auditing, and fiat conversion. The company previously launched UseBitcoin.jp, a consumer business allowing users to purchase digital gift cards using Lightning payments.
