National Sheriffs' Association Drops Opposition to Clarity Act

According to reporting by Bitcoin Magazine, the National Sheriffs' Association has dropped its opposition to the crypto Clarity Act, shifting its stance to neutral. In a letter written Thursday to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, NSA President Sheriff Troy Wellman and Executive Director Justin Smith stated that the organization stepped back to allow the legislative process to establish a regulatory framework due to the complexity of the issue.

Previously, the law enforcement organization warned that the proposed bill could aid criminals by creating regulatory and anti-money laundering loopholes. A vote on the Clarity Act is now scheduled for this month following an August delay. The legislation aims to establish a framework distinguishing between digital assets that are securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins.

While the bill passed the House of Representatives last year with bipartisan support, it faced a deadlock in 2026 amid concerns from the banking lobby and lawmakers regarding stablecoin yield and ethics. An updated bill introduced in July prohibited government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto. Senator Cynthia Lummis stated that the bipartisan bill provides law enforcement with tools to combat illicit finance.
